Eventuais colaborações trans-disciplinares propiciam-me cartografias produtivas, e interacções permanentes permitem a coexistência-diálogo de várias posturas intelectuais no desenvolvimento do projecto.

House Pedro Pessoa

A small project made a decade ago

This architectural study envisioned a house for a graphical designer in Portugal. It offers a minimal space (including 1 living room, 1 room, 1 bathroom and 1 kitchen) defined by two almost opaque walls. The extremities of these two walls define 2 external spaces, which serves the room and the living room. The abstract character of the dwelling envisioned to establish a harmonious relationship with the surrounding landscape and river as well as to provide a neutral interior space for creative isolation.

Global cities and repressed marginal design discourses”.

paper on critical project

Abstract proposed for “research spaces”, 2004-2005

Gonçalo Furtado

“This paper debates the contemporary construction of what we have named in a recent book 'critical project'. That is to say, it proposes to reflect on the nature and the conditions of performance of design-based researches, developed in an oscillating space between theory and building.
The paper begins by identifying a certain hierarchy between construction, design, and theory that could have been working as a motor on the instrumentalization of the discipline ('simulacrum'). It concludes by proposing the possibility of a Critical Project that mediates theory and construction, and contemplates on the part that critical theory might assume in the design practice of post-modern architecture – a motor that permanently doubts prescriptions, that problematizes the projectual potential, and that secures the discipline’s auto-critical dynamic.
In order to achieve that, an overview of the 20th Century will be initially provided, highlighting the necessary shift from a Theory of 'prescription' to building practice to a dynamic self-criticism of the Architectural Institution itself. (A Narrative which could begin with the Modern complexities, in which Theory operated towards legitimizing a generic and totalitarian design and a constructive practice, which later lead to the post-modern disbelief and mistrust that, since the culture of criticism of the 60s, has questioned the purpose of the architectural practice by focusing on the conceptualization of the 'ways of inhabiting' that it inscribed.)
One will argue, that despite contemporary shapes, the Critical Project, autonomous or actualized through construction, must question the world of construction in which it moves, the physical expression of structures of power, the effects of negligent Modern and initial Post-Modern construction, the socio-economic results already described in the authority of the commission-client.
Today, it seems urgent to design those projects as disciplinary critical research-constructions – as ‘other’ speculations that resist to any type of totalization that inscribes marginalized perspectives, potentiating the cultural intervention capacity of the discipline.”

EXHIBITION AND ROUND TABLE: INTERNATIONAL OFF FORUM DE LAS CULTURAS
MET ROOM GALLERY, BARCELONA, 2004

Project directed by Carlos Hernandez (Program of International Studies – Universidade Javeriana – Colombia, Bogota)

and Gonçalo Furtado

1.
The reserach developed last year at the 'Program of International Studies' of the Universidad Javeriana, was done under a very profund theoretical profile, studying deeply the topic of New Technologies under the light of a reinterpretation of the meaning of practice in Architecture and the content of cultures. Conceptually it was based in the interdisciplinary that takes place when architectonic thought relates with Arts, Design, Philosophy, as well as areas involving the growing development od scince: computer scince and bio-technology.

2.
The project exhibited was developed under the direction of Professors Carlos Hernandez and the invited portuguese critic and professor Goncalo Furtado, it was centered on the idea of designing a 'Critical Artefact' in the complex context of the post-modern city.
The authors belive that, beyond the converncional practices there must be critical acts to the productive surroundings. They insert themselves in a practice, that does not distinguish cultural production from social intervention. It´s a practice that avoids being mere instrument of it´s reproduction, of the degrading status quo focusing initially on the auto-critic of the Architecture-instituion itself, conceiving 'other' culturally critical artefacts present on the 'borders', that ambitionate to produce a post-modern interventive disciplinary body. The poststructural speech infiltrates the institutional speech to discipline, wich we inherit.

Lecture

The DIGITAL SOCIETY/TECHNICS
Lecture in RPI-NY years ago

"As we face the "digital revolution", it seems necessary to undertake critical reflection which will consider the appropriation of the recent technological paradigm by architecture. in the ambit of this lecture, i will attempt to show how the concept of the "digital machine" was generated in the underground of western thinking, and how this device has become a mediating entity in our relationship with the real world. i will argue that the presence of this "digital machine" implies profound interference in the discipline of architecture (from the stage of the project, through construction and urban design) and will support a post-modern programme of hybridisation with the "machine", able to provide theoretical assistance for the construction of a new space of human interaction as well as of new ways of perception and being."

Body in the space of technique

THE BODY IN THE SPACE OF CONTEMPORARY TECHNIQUE
Gonçalo Furtado
Abstract
"The essay 'The body in the space of contemporary technique' is an approach to several relevant features of the relation between Body and Space, in order to ponder the civilizational models implied by their representations.According to the idea of Interface, we cast our eyes to the Machine-technique in order to expose the intimate relationship established with the Body, reconfiguring it and mediating its connection to the 'real'.Nowadays, a socio-techno-cultural mutation, known as «Informational», was responsible for the emergence of a new space-time structure that not only reconfigures the public sphere, the city and architecture, but also advocates the substitution-obsolescence of the Body itself. In this context, it is a task for the professionals of Communication and Design to explore in a critical fashion the communicational space generated by Technique as a support of the existence of contemporary human Body in its real-virtual wandering, and also to conceive new political interfaces towards an 'Expanded body'."

Costa's perface

Xavier Costa, Perfacio, in: GONÇALO FURTADO, NOTAS SOBRE O ESAPAÇO DA TÉCNICA DIGITAL, MIMESIS, Porto, 2002.

Theory and Practice

CRITICAL PROJECT - A ROLE FOR THEORY IN THE PRACTISE OF CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE
Gonçalo Furtado

"If we conceive architecture not as merely the «art of organizing and constructing spaces» but rather as the conceptualization and sharing of 'life-forms', we are forced to reevaluate the relation between theory and practice in this realm of knowledge. It is thus crucial to understand the transition from modernity to post-modernity, since, as much as in modernity architecture was conformed to a totalitarian language, with post-modernism arose a complex process that triggered deep cultural effects. Among these, we highlight the new perception of architecture as a cultural artefact able to articulate auto-reflexively a theory from its practices, and not reduced to the expression of a technique aimed at accomplishing a function."

manifesto

Contornamos pois, conscientemente, qualquer totalitarização do sistema disciplinar mediante vigilância quanto a qualquer negociação.

multiple SCALE SPECULATIONS
A lecture and workshop cycle contemplating speculations throughout different scales in contemporary design and architecture, aiming to map new problems and future answers.

This updating of design and architecture’s practices is based on the contemporary instability and points to the creation of innovating imaginary worlds and dynamic interventions.

Its an act of thinking the future, not wishing to produce a static and complete image, but to send out an alert on the expectations ahead of us, whom which we build the present.
