DIGITAL DESIGN WORKSHOP - OUT OF THE BOX

DIGITAL DESIGN WORKSHOP
"OUT OF THE BOX: THINKING, DESIGNING, BUILDING"
FAUP, 6-10 Abril 2009
By José Pedro SOusa

Organized by G.Furtado e R.Póvoas
"Actualmente, vive-se um momento em que as tecnologias digitais permitem interferir
em qualquer momento do processo de projecto em arquitectura. O recurso a
novos sistemas construtivos. Assistindo a concepção, desenvolvimento e
Neste contexto, o Workshop “OUT OF THE BOX” dedica-se ao ensino e

DESIGN, MANUFACTURE AND EXPERIENCE

DESIGN, MANUFACTURE AND EXPERIENCE: ABOUT ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPTION
Gonçalo M Furtado C Lopes, PhD

"The interference of the digital and the appropriation of the new technologies as a mean and as a support are being felt at the level of the environment of the project (that is, at the very level of design and architectural conception), which is showing the strain of the pressure of information technology and informationalization that it has been undergoing for two decades now, to the extent that new instruments, methodologies and organizational practices are appearing in the carrying out of the design and architectural project. In this paper, based in my 2000’s “Interferências, do Digital no Campo da Arcquitectura” and subsequent books, I will review several transformations and challenges related with Design, Manufacture and Experience.
First, one points to an efficient environment of computerized machines that plan to evolve into a ‘self-generative and self-referential’ system - a new digital environment which aims is to enable design and architectural activity. In that process the development of the CAAD sector should be pinpointed, understood as an instrumental development but, most of all a methodological one, which holds the promise of na environment provided with intelligence and intervention, able to provide imaginative models, generative procedures (incorporating dynamism in the representation) and systems of thought based on casuistry.
Second, one recalls that with three-dimensional modulation supported by interfaces of instant visualization and experimentation, as well as management and manufacturing software (the ‘Parametric CAD’ and the ‘CAD CAM’), the frontiers between numeric programming and spatial experience, and between conception and production, collapse.
Finally one acknowledges that, complex theoretical approaches understand ‘modeling’ in an environment characterized by mediation (which we have been calling a digital network) as a potential construction-constitution of shared living environments, contiguous with physical constructions, which could mean the appearance of new territorial domains of architectural practice."

Gonçalo M Furtado C L, “The Encounters Around Architecture and Systems Research: [An Introductory Excerpt]”, in: AA Issue 8 (Newsletter), Architectural Association, London, 2009. [Forthcoming]

This text is an excerpt of Furtado’s original text: Gonçalo M. Furtado C. L., “Envisioning an Evolving Environment: The Encounters of Gordon Pask, Cedric Price and John Frazer” [PhD Dissertation], London: University College of London, 2007, pp.6-8.
The thesis was based mainly on Furtado’s 2005 primary research of Gordon Pask’s personal archive (held by Ms. Amanda Heitler at the time) and Cedric Price Archives (held at the Canadian Centre for Architecture). Research was made possible by a scholarship from FCT (Co-financiamento do programa Operatcional da Ciência e Inovação 2010 e do Fundo Social Europeu). The thesis’s abstract reads: “This thesis provides a history of exchanges between architecture and the fields of cybernetics, systems research and computation throughout the last five decades. In particular, it focuses on the encounters between three pre-eminent British professionals - Gordon Pask, Cedric Price and John Frazer - and provides a complete account of two outstanding architectural projects related to systems and computation - Generator and Japan Net. It also highlights the architectural relevance of these encounters and the importance of their contemporary legacy - the genesis of the systemic and computational paradigm in architectural design and the promotion of an evolving environment.”

IGNÁSI SOLÁ-MORALES

TO INTERPRET THE CONTEMPORANEOUS METROPOLIS: NOTES ON IGNÁSI SOLÁ-MORALES
Gonçalo Furtado

"
* The legacy of Ignási Sola-Morales

The theory of architecture and urbanism faces the difficult task of struggling to make acknowledgeable the complexity of the modern city. In this sense, the legacy of the recently diseased history researcher and architecture theorist Ignási Sola-Morales arises as a sharp, generous and open perspective.
I clearly remember how the news that his heart yield in due to a stressful life strongly shook the architectural milieu.
Not expecting such a rigueur as that out coming from relatives and close relations, I dared, for three nights, having for company the motorway buzz, to organize a set of notes that the contact I had had with Solá-Morales writings personality granted me to take.
Besides an apparent sense of enigma, his work has the genuine capacity of describing the cartography and sharing the city in its contemporary complexity.
[...]
As this same article advances, we intend to show how the work of Ignási Sola Morales presents, in a generous, sharp and open way besides all the apparent enigma, the genuine capacity of cartographing and sharing the city in all its contemporaneous complexity."

Wednesday, 11th of March, 5.00 to 6.00 pm

"Some Links between Infinite Scales and Primary Archival Research on Pask and Price.
Abstract: Art, Design and Architecture have all been affected and influenced by computer science and related fields, and this fact can act as the inspiration for a mutant generative environment. In this lecture, I will argue that the contemporary condition suggests the need for a dialogue between the infinitely large and small. The minute scale of the body-technology-space interface has become a critical question, and, on a larger scale, the dynamics of self-organizing systems has come to dominate our understanding of the meta-environment of the future. I will also provide a brief history of exchanges between architecture and the fields of computation and cybernetics, based on my books and primary archival research on the British mavericks Gordon Pask and Cedric Price".
